There is a beautiful symbolism held within this piece. Its name, Chumil, meaning “star” in Kaqchikel, speaks to something both guiding and enduring. At its center, a woven star emerges gently from the surface, a reminder of connection, direction, and the beauty found in thoughtful detail.

Handcrafted by artisans in Guatemala, this basket carries the textures and tones of the natural world. Indigo hues deepen the pattern, while subtle variations in fiber and weave reveal the human touch behind each piece. Whether placed on a table, shelf, or wall, it brings a sense of grounded artistry - something both functional and quietly meaningful.

Key Features:
  • Handwoven Artisan Craftsmanship: Each basket is carefully woven by hand, reflecting generations of traditional weaving techniques. The result is a piece that feels both intentional and deeply rooted in craft.
  • Natural + Sustainable Materials: Made from longleaf pine needles, pajón (a native Guatemalan grass), and raffia. These materials offer durability while preserving the organic texture and character of the fibers.
  • Symbolic Star Motif: The central star design, inspired by the Kaqchikel word Chumil, adds a layer of meaning - subtle yet present, woven directly into the form.
  • Functional + Decorative Use: Ideal as a catchall, tabletop accent, or wall display. A versatile piece that balances beauty and everyday utility.
  • One-of-a-Kind Variations: Each basket will vary slightly in tone, pattern, and weave, reflecting its handmade nature.

There is a story held within each fiber - of place, of tradition, of hands working patiently over time. Our Chumil Indigo Basket carries that story forward, offering something to be both used and quietly appreciated.

Meet the Maker : Mayan Hands

Mayan Hands is a fair trade nonprofit working alongside Maya women and girls in the Guatemalan Highlands. Through long-term partnerships, education, and access to wider markets, the organization supports artisans as artists, businesswomen, and leaders within their communities. The pine needle baskets and trivets we carry are coiled by hand from local grasses and pine, their subtle variations preserving the presence of the woman who made them. Each one brings beauty into the home while helping create greater possibility beyond it.
